Service Agreement & Informed Consent

Philosophical Counselling with Achilles Atlas Justice

1) Purpose of the Service

Philosophical Counselling is a structured process of clarification, reasoning, and skill-building. The aim is to help you become more clear, stable, and capable in your decision-making and self-maintenance by examining assumptions, beliefs, habits, attitudes, and behaviours through discussion and observation. This service uses a reasoning model that evaluates evidence and tests theories for practical improvement (analogous to a professional “hypothesis testing” process).

2) What This Service Is and Is Not

Counseling is not psychotherapy and not a regulated clinical service. Philosophical Counselling assumes you are engaged in your own self-therapeutic process; I do not provide psychotherapy.

Not emergency services. This service is not designed for urgent crisis situations. If your needs are outside my scope, I may recommend that you seek support from an appropriate regulated health professional or service.

3) Client–Counsellor Relationship and Boundaries

The relationship is professional. There is an inherent imbalance (experience, education, access to private information), and maintaining professional boundaries protects both client autonomy and informed consent.

Professional boundaries:

No dual relationships, will exist during counseling to protect clarity of consent and prevent confusion, dependency, or compromised judgment. I do not engage in dual relationships with clients while counselling is ongoing (e.g., close friendship, business partnerships, or other overlapping social roles).

Sexual boundaries:

No sexual relationship will exist within the client–counsellor relationship.

4) Confidentiality and Its Limits

Confidentiality is a core part of this service. Information shared in sessions is kept private, except where disclosure may be required or justified, including:

 - there is a serious and immediate safety concern,
- child protection concerns must be addressed, and/or
- where disclosure is required by law (for example, a lawful order or legal requirement).

Confidentiality applies across spoken and electronic communication, but no electronic method is perfectly private. Email, video platforms, scheduling tools, and payment systems are third-party services and have privacy limitations that are not fully within my control.

Group sessions (if applicable)

If two or more people attend a session together, the content of that session is confidential to those participants. Participants are expected to respect the privacy of other participants.

5) Record-Keeping

I may keep brief records as a memory aid and as part of maintaining continuity and quality of service. These records are kept confidential. You may request access to your records and request corrections if an error has occurred.

6) Communication Between Sessions

Communication outside of sessions (email/text) is intended for logistics (scheduling, payment, brief clarifications). It is not a substitute for a session, and it is not appropriate for urgent matters. If you offer a retainer with messaging access, response times are best efforts and not guaranteed.

7) Scheduling, Late Arrivals, Cancellations, and No-Shows

 -  Your session time is reserved specifically for you.
- If you arrive late, the session typically ends at the scheduled time.
- Rescheduling requires at least 24 hours’ notice. (subject to availability).
- Missed sessions and late cancellations are forfeited.

8) Fees, Payment, and No Refunds

 - Payment is required in advance to reserve session time.
- All payments are final and non-refundable.
- Any additional time, extended sessions, or special requests may require additional fees.

9) Retainers / Packages (If Purchased)

If you purchase a retainer or package, you understand and agree that:

 - Sessions must be booked through the scheduling system.
- Any “use-it-or-lose-it” rule described at purchase applies (for example: a set number of sessions per month that do not roll over).
- Retainers/packages are non-refundable.

10) Risks, Responsibility, and No Guarantees

Counselling can involve sensitive topics and may bring discomfort or strong emotions. Participation is voluntary. You are responsible for your decisions and actions outside of sessions, including how you apply ideas discussed. I do not guarantee specific outcomes.

11) Not for Emergencies

If you believe you are in a crisis or require urgent help, this service is not appropriate in that moment. Use local emergency services or appropriate crisis supports.

12) Age and Capacity to Consent

By booking and/or paying for services, you confirm that you are of legal age to consent under the laws applicable to you (Ontario/Canada) or that a legal guardian has provided consent where required, and that you are capable of understanding this agreement.

13) Agreement

By booking, paying for, or attending a session, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Service Agreement & Informed Consent and agree to its terms.
